A horse blanket helps you to keep your horse safe, warm and healthy during the winters.
Why use horse turnout blanket?
Turnout blanket is usually made with a rugged material. It is a waterproof blanket that keeps your horse warm during winters even if it is raining. It is a perfect blanket to use during snow, rain or muddy conditions.
Turnout blankets come in a variety of different designs and allow freedom of movement to your horse with its flexible design.
Always keep in mind that a horse blanket is really important for your horse during the chilly weather.
Even if your horse has the thickest coat, still he will be needing a blanket during the winters. You can keep your horse safe from the harsh weather conditions by using a turnout blanket. A horse blanket is also useful for you because it will give you peace of mind. Once you know that your horse is warm and safe, you will not have to worry about his health.
But, choosing a horse turnout blanket is not an easy task. You should know how to properly measure the blanket. You should also know how to measure a horse for a blanket the right way. While buying a turnout blanket for your horse, you will notice that there are many different levels of protection of turnout blankets available in the market.
To know what type of turnout horse blanket is suitable for your horse, you should properly assess the living conditions of your horse as well as the weather conditions.
Here is a detailed blog post on choosing a horse blanket according to the weather:
Types of turnout blankets
There are different levels of turnout weights available in the market. You can choose any type of turnout blanket according to your requirements and desires. By the level of turnout weight, I mean the amount of poly fill that is inserted between the two layers of a blanket.
Mostly, this weight can be measured in grams for example 100 grams, 120 grams etc. As the weight of this poly fill increases, the blanket becomes heavier as well as warmer. Less the amount of poly fill weight, less warm will be the blanket.
Here are some of the types of turnout blankets:
Lightweight turnout horse blankets
As the name suggests, these turnout blankets are lighter in weight as compared to other blankets. Usually, they contain only one hundred grams of fill in their center. These blankets are suitable when the weather just starts to change.
These lightweight turnout blankets keep your horse warm but it is not sufficient for colder weather. When the weather starts becoming harsher, you might consider changing this blanket and using another turnout blanket that has more weight.
Medium weight turnout blanket
The second type of a turnout blanket is medium weight turnout blanket. The weight of this blanket is more than the light weight turnout blanket but less than the heavy weight turnout blanket. Most of the time, these blankets contain 180 grams to 200 grams of poly fill between the layers of a blanket.
This is an ideal blanket for a weather that is cold but not very cold. Most of the people buy medium weight turnout blanket because it can be used more often as compared to other turnout blankets.
Heavy weight horse turnout blanket
The third type of a turnout horse blanket is heavy weight horse turnout blanket. This type of blanket is heavier than the light weight and medium weight blanket. Usually, it has 300 grams to 400 grams of poly fill between the upper and lower sheets of a turnout blanket.
A heavy weight turnout blanket is suitable for extreme cold weather conditions. However, before using a heavy weight turnout blanket, you must keep in mind that this blanket is not for the normal cold weather. The warmth of this blanket can be too much for your horse. Therefore, you should only use it during the extreme weather conditions.
This is another type of turnout. Though, turnout sheet cannot be classified as a turnout blanket because it does not have any poly fill between the sheets of a blanket. The turnout sheets are lightest in weight as compared to other turnouts.
The purpose of these turnout sheets is to protect your horse from the mud or rain. But, they are not designed to provide warmth to a horse. Therefore, these sheets are not suitable for a harsh weather. Also, keep in mind that these turnout sheets should not be worn by a horse during summer because they can get very hot.
I would recommend you to buy a medium weight and a heavy weight turnout blanket for your horse so that you can change it according to the weather.
